Start a Strength Training Habit That Sticks

Introducing LIFT the newest member of services offered at Inbloom Health.
We have been wanting to slowly build out our services and offerings at the clinic to reflect our commitment to community. We want to create a space you can rely on to help cheer you on and provide tangible resources to take action on your health goals. So without further ado say hello to LIFT—our strength training class designed to make adding strength/resistance training (weight lifting) approachable, fun, and sustainable.
We know how intimidating starting (or restarting) strength training can feel, so we teamed up with Keely Turner, a certified trainer with over 10 years of experience, to create a workout that meets you where you are.
Why we prescribe strength/resistance/weight training to all our patients?
Strength training isn’t just about building muscle it is about building a longer healthier life. Recent studies highlight that women who engage in strength training two to three times a week significantly reduce their risk of heart disease and increase their lifespan.
Strength training offers numerous benefits, including:
- Improved bone and joint health: Enhances bone density and joint function
- If you suffer from arthritis, knee, hip or back pain start by working with the Bodyworks team to find the right pain management and injury prevention strength training class
- GL:D - hip and knee pain
- Back Strong - back pain and injury
- Intro to strength - General Past Injury and fear around reintroducing weight lifting
- Enhanced mood: Boosts mental well-being.
- Improves Cardiovascular Health
- A recent 2024 study showed women who engaged in resistance/strength training 2-3x a week could reduce their risk of dying from a heart attack by 30%. Evidence we cannot ignore.
- Protects Cognition: Strength training has been shown to help reduce risk of cognitive impairment later in life Exercise is one of the few evidence backed options for reducing your risk of developing cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer's.
- Better metabolic health: Aids in maintaining a healthy metabolism by improving blood sugar control, exercise helps reduce insulin resistance and type II diabetes risk. It is also a foundation in our treatment plans to manage these conditions.

How once a week consistently will build the habit and why I encourage just once a week (to start) :
Committing to one LIFT session a week is how we start breaking out of the all-or-nothing mindset. If you're used to 30-day challenges or think that 3–4 workouts a week is the only way it "counts," once a week might feel like not enough, but it’s actually the foundation for consistency.
Protecting this one session teaches your brain to build a habit and reminds you that your health is worth scheduling around. It will mean shifting meetings, child care, or your lunch break but over time, it becomes easier. After a couple of months, you’ll feel more confident adding a second or third session, because you’ve already proven you can make space for it.
At Inbloom, we talk a lot about strength training but this is how we build a sustainable strength training habit: one consistent choice at a time.
